WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is the main treatment for spider veins, reticular veins, and small varicose veins.
Other treatments (such as laser or radiofrequency vein ablation) work very well for larger varicose veins, but not as well for smaller veins that are too tiny to fit the catheter that is needed. However, sclerotherapy does not have that problem and can be used both for permanent removal of spider veins as well as for bigger veins.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Sclerotherapy is a low-risk and common procedure where a chemical irritant is injected directly into the vein with a syringe to make it collapse. This chemical irritant is usually a liquid, but can also be a foam or glue, and is often salt-based. The sclerotherapy treatment session can last anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes. The procedure can be done right in your doctor’s office and does not require hospitalization. However, you may be asked to avoid strenuous activity for a few days after the procedure, and you may need to wear compression stockings or bandages on your leg after the sclerotherapy procedure.
Up to 80% of injected veins are eliminated each time the sclerotherapy procedure is performed, and the injected veins often lighten with each treatment. Several sclerotherapy treatments are usually needed to make the injected veins lighten enough to disappear entirely from sight. It can take up to six weeks for spider or reticular veins to disappear after sclerotherapy, and it can take larger veins up to four months to disappear. If new veins reappear, the sclerotherapy procedure will have to be repeated to treat those as well. Complications are also similar to those for other vein-closing procedures and may include infection, irritation, and color changes in the skin. Advantages include that most people can resume normal activities very quickly after the procedure, and you may be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. The results of sclerotherapy for spider veins, reticular veins, and small varicose veins can also be superior to other methods of getting rid of those veins.
